Configuring how members are displayed

When a member is displayed within the grid or chart, normally only the caption of the member is displayed. It is possible to add additional information by using the display properties dialog. This information can provide background information on the member itself (member properties) or the path to the member.

Opening the display properties dialog

To open the display properties dialog:

From the hierarchy context menu (available by right-clicking on a hierarchy) select Display Properties.
Open the hierarchy editor, click on the Options menu and select Display Properties.

From the display properties dialog, you can change how the caption of a member is displayed as well as which information, i.e. member properties, is displayed together with the member.

Changing the caption of a member

On the General tab of the display properties dialog, you can choose to add extra information to the caption of the member itself. The following options are available:

Include name of dimension

Prefix the name of the member with the name of the dimension, e.g. "Time - January 2006"

Include name of hierarchy

Prefix the name of the member with the name of the hierarchy, e.g. "Fiscal - January 2006"

Include name of level

Prefix the name of the member with the name of the level, e.g. "Month - January 2006"

Include name of parent member

Prefix the name of the member with the name of the parent member, e.g. "Q1 2006 - January 2006"

Include all ancestor names

Prefix the name of the member with the names of all ancestors up to the member, e.g. "2006 - Q1 2006 - January 2006"

A case where, for example, the parent name comes in handy is when dealing with Time dimensions that do not already qualify members with context info. If Q1 of 2005 and Q1 of 2006 are displayed next to each other, it isn't clear which quarter is which without the year also being displayed in the title, e.g. 2005 - Q1 and 2006 - Q1.

Displaying member properties

You can add properties of a member as an extra column in the grid next to the member name as shown below.

There are two ways to add member properties:

1. Using the Display Properties dialog

On Member Properties tab, member properties of the hierarchy can be selected, which will be displayed next to the member to which they apply when displayed in the grid.

To display member properties click the Add button to bring up the list of available properties for the hierarchy as shown below.

You can select one or more properties to be displayed and click OK to add them to the list of selected properties.

You can change the order of the columns by clicking the up and down buttons, and remove properties by clicking the Delete button.

Note: member properties are only displayed when the hierarchy is added to the Rows axis on the grid.

2. Using the member context menu

There's also a quicker alternative to display member properties than using the display properties dialog: the member context menu.

The member context menu can be accessed by right-clicking on a member; you can then click on a member property to display or hide that member property.

Clicking on Manage... will take you to the Member Properties tab in the Display Properties dialog for the hierarchy.

Freeze/Unfreeze property columns

When you add a member property to the grid, it will be placed next to the member name and will not scroll along with the results. This column is frozen on the left hand side. If you select many member properties, the results may become unreachable due the amount of fixed columns. To overcome this, you can unfreeze the column. Unfreezing a column will allow it to scroll along with the results.

To unfreeze a column:

Deselect the Frozen check in the column header context menu
Press the Unfreeze All item in the column header context menu to unfreeze all columns
In the display properties dialog, check the Frozen box next to the property
