Actions are pre-defined operations, which can be defined on cube data, such as dimensions, hierarchies, Levels, members and result cells. Actions can be used, for example, to retrieve more information about a member or cell value via an external application or source, such as a web site or legacy application.

Executing and action

To execute an action on an object, right click on the object and select the desired action from the Actions submenu as shown below.

Three types of actions are supported, identified by the following icons:

This type of action generates HTML; the HTML will be opened within the default web browser

This type of action opens a the default web browser and navigates to a url

This type of action generates a command line that will be executed in a command shell

This type of action generates a table that is the result of a drillthrough operation. A new window will be opened will the results of the drillthrough operation.

Note: if no actions are defined for an object, the submenu will be empty.

Configuring Actions

Adding or removing actions is done via the Analysis Services management interface and requires knowledge of Analysis Services. Consult your olap administrator for more information.
