Sorting the results

Sorting the results is useful if you want to order the results by ranking a measure on a certain column.

You can also sort by the name of the members on the rows.

Sorting on a column

To sort on a column:

Click the header of the column you want to sort on. By repeatedly clicking the header you will switch between ascending and descending mode.  All the sort options are also available under the right-mouse menu. Here you can also remove the sorting by clicking on Not sorted.
Right-click on a column header in the grid or a legend item in the chart and select an option from the Sort submenu. If there are multiple nested hierarchies in the columns, only right-clicking the lowest (most nested) hierarchy will provide the sort option.

Breaking and non-breaking sorts

Sorting can be performed in a breaking or non-breaking fashion. When sorting non-breaking, the items in the column will be sorted, however, the hierarchy of the members will always remain intact. What this comes down to is that the lowest level members are sorted within the context of their parent member(gender) only (see figure 1) . A breaking sort will sort all lowest level members within the context of the parent members, thus not respecting the hierarchy of the members (see figure 2).

To make the sort a breaking sort not using the menu, hold the control (Ctrl) key while clicking on the caption of the column.

Note: when a breaking sort is used, drilling up and down may not produce the results that you expect as the hierarchical ordering is no longer respected. Remove the sort or switch back to a non-breaking sort if this confuses you.

Sorting on row members

Sorting on row members can also be done by clicking on the column header for the row members. Alternatively, you can use the Sort submenu of the hierarchy context menu, accessed by right clicking on a hierarchy in the dimensions window or by right clicking on one of the hierarchy buttons on one of the axes.
